EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
