Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
