Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
